Dio ~ Magica / Spitfire
I bought my first album with Ronnie James Dio back in 1975 and I have been collecting his stuff ever since. In my opinion, his band Dio has produced a few classics over the years(mainly "Holy Diver", "The Last In Line", "Strange Highways" and now this one) and I always look forward to his product/concerts. "Magica" sees the welcome return of guitarist Craig Goldie and bassplayer Jimmy Bain into the ranks and on drums we have the great Simon Wright, so lineup wise everything looks good. The difference from the last album "Angry Machines"(not counting the great livealbum) is that the songs are much better and more melodic in nature. Not to mention that the production side has never been better. On "Angry Machines" I liked one song. On this one I like all but one. The music here is grand. Majestic is a good word. "Fever Dreams" is a Dio classic. "Losing My Insanity" has a nice folkish feeling to it, a little Irish perhaps? All in all, I´ve listened to this album every day now for a while. And suddenly I think Dio has a future again. This is going to be great live and we all know that this band will be great onstage anyway. If you liked Dio in the early days, buy this! And tell your friends that Dio Rules supreme again!
